(USGovernment-News.Com, June 12, 2013 ) Rocky Mount, NC – Monday afternoon a semi-trailer traveling on U.S. Highway 301 Bypass south of U.S. Highway 64 overturned on a Rocky Mount bridge. The driver of the large rig had been missing since the time of the accident but his body was found late Monday night. Authorities have not released the driver’s name but family members have identified him as David Stone, a veteran truck driver who lived in the area.
According to witnesses another vehicle pulled out in front of Stone’s truck causing him to lose control of the semi which toppled over the bridge and into a stream. Specifically, the truck’s cab went into the rain swollen Stoney Creek while the trailer remained suspended on the bridge.
Stoney Creek’s water rescue team was dispatched but the water was moving too fast to attempt any rescue efforts. Northbound lanes of U.S. 301 Bypass remained closed as authorities investigated the scene and the truck removed from out of the water.
In 2011 approximately 273,000 commercial motor vehicle accidents were reported according to the U.S Department of Transportation. Of these accidents more than 3,000 are fatal.
