(USGovernment-News.Com, May 25, 2013 ) TULSA, OK As a result of the recent tornado's that trampled over Oklahoma, The Edwards Law Firm has gathered information to help increase the safety of our Oklahoma residence and everyone else affected by tornado's.
Essentially, a tornado is a rotating column of air which makes contact to both the surface of the earth along with a cumulonimbus cloud. The average speed of a tornado is less than 110 miles per hour and around 250 feet across. Of course, more severe tornado's have the ability to produce winds over 300 miles per hour and span more than two miles across, similar to the tornado that recently struck Oklahoma.
Although a tornado can strike at any moment, giving us minimal time to take cover, there are preventable measures and precautions we can take to increase our chance of surviving these tornado's. The following include measures we can take to keep ourselves safe during a tornado no matter where you may be.
These tornado safety measures include:
At Home:
Get under a solid piece of furniture, workbench, or desk.
Go to windowless, interior room at the lowest level possible.
If youre in a mobile home, get out and seek alternative shelter.
Place your arms over your head and neck in crouched position.
Take cover in tornado safe room immediately.
At Work or School:
Avoid areas with high roofs such as shopping malls, gymnasiums, auditoriums, cafeterias.
Get under solid piece of furniture, workbench, or desk.
Go to area designated for tornado.
Go to windowless, interior room at the lowest level possible.
Place your arms over your head and neck in crouched position.
Outdoors:
Get indoors if possible.
If there is no shelter, and no time to get indoors, find lowest area, lie in a ditch, or crouch near something sturdy.
Place arms over head and neck in crouched position. Beware of flooding.
In a Car:
Do not attempt to out-drive a tornado
Get out of car and find shelter in nearest building
If there is no shelter, and no time to get indoors, find lowest area, lie in a ditch, or crouch near something sturdy. Stay away from vehicle and beware of flooding.
