Study Finds Obese Individuals More Susceptible to Death in Crash

(USGovernment-News.Com, April 30, 2013 ) Camden, NJ -- According to a new study, obese drivers with a body mass index between 30 and 35 were 20% more likely to expire during a car crash as compared to average-weighted individuals.

The morbidly obese individuals, who had BMI above 40 on the BMI scale were 80% more likely to die during a car crash. The BMI ratio is determined by a weight to height ratio and is an indicator of body fatness.

The results held similar even after researchers accounts for factors that may influence the risk of death in a car crash. Such variables included alcohol use, seat belt use, and airbag deployment.

The findings agree with studies conducted prior, which included the study published in 2012 that noted an increase in risk of death for those with a BMI over 35.

The newest study analyzed information from more than 3,400 pairs of drivers involved in car crashes between 1996 and 2008. The drivers in the pair had to be driving similar car types to be included into the study so that the characteristics of vehicle effect were similar. Individuals crashes had to be somewhat similar as well. In the totality of the study, 18% of those surveyed were considered to be obese.

Obese individuals were more likely to have medical conditions, such as preexisting cardiovascular disease, which increases the chance of dying during a car crash, according to the study.

The study also may have exposed the need for direct and pointed changes necessary to better protect overweight individuals, say researchers. One particular study found that obese drivers traveled much farther in their seat before the belt engaged in the pelvic area during impact when compared to an average-weighted individual.
