Explosion On Alabama Fuel Barge

(USGovernment-News.Com, April 26, 2013 ) Mobile, AL – On Wednesday evening at about 8:30 p.m. an explosion occurred on a natural gas barge on the east side of the Mobile river. By 10 p.m. approximately three more blasts had occurred and Mobile Fire and Rescue confirmed that a total of seven blasts had transpired between Wednesday night and early Thursday morning.

Three people were injured on site as they were cleaning up the barge; two are in a burn unit and the other in a surgical trauma unit at the Mobile University of South Alabama Medical Center.

Reports indicate that the initial explosion was sparked by a static charge after crews had been working on emptying the barge earlier in the day to get it ready to transport gas on Thursday. Authorities have created a one-mile radius evacuation zone around the barge. Some residents of Austral, Alabama have evacuated the area and a neighboring Carnival cruise line ship with approximately 800 persons on board was also evacuated.

The Coast Guard has closed the channel and issued an order to restrict flights around the barge area. Firefighters and emergency personnel arrived on scene immediately to try to control the fire which was controlled by about 7:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.

Each year hundreds of people are injured on the job due to serious accidents. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics there were 174 fatal injuries due to fires and explosions in 2008 and of those 18 were in the oil and gas industry. Additionally, the number of fatal injuries caused by explosions and fires grew between 2007 and 2008.
