With vibrant charts and timely statistics, this unique piece is truly informative. According to the infographic, there are currently 1,429,995 soldiers on active duty in the Armed Forces. An additional 850,880 soldiers are in seven reserve components. While these brave soldiers defend America and our way of life, they do have their own families to take care of as well.
Based on the infographic, 56.6% of active duty soldiers and 57.7% of reserves have family responsibilities. This includes taking care of spouses, children, and one or more adult dependents. These figures are courtesy of the U.S. Army Community and Family Support Center. There are also 1.4 family members for every service member. Their satisfaction with military life are major factors in a soldier’s decision to stay or leave the military.
According to the infographic, service members are more likely to marry at a younger age. Most also have young children at home. There are also more military family members than service members. Most of these families move or relocate every 2-3 years. This is 2.4x more than civilian families.
In terms of military relocations, 74% of military families do not move. While 14% move within their respective counties, about 2% move within their state. 5% of military families also move to different states, while an additional 5% move abroad. The latter is for soldiers that get stationed in Europe, Asia, and other continents with American bases. Due to constant relocation, however, military spouses and kids tend to face several issues. This includes higher unemployment and lower wages for spouses, along with settling children in different schools.
While 82% of military spouses are satisfied with their marriage and life, 8% are dissatisfied. An additional 10% of spouses are neutral. Again, these figures are courtesy of the U.S. Army Community and Family Support Center. While the vast majority of military spouses are women, there are a growing number of military husbands as well.
Like their female counterparts, male military spouses face a number of issues and challenges. This includes gender norms and expectations, along with employment opportunities and social isolation. Still, civilian spouses are able to effectively manage several tasks before their significant others are deployed. This includes work, household chores, health, and even regular volunteer work.
In cases of post-deployment, 54% of spouses rated their reunion adjustment as easy. 22% of spouses, however, find the adjustment rather difficult. The infographic also highlights the age distribution of military brats. These are, of course, children of a parent or parents that are serving full-time in the Armed Forces. According to the infographic, 42% of military brats are 0-5 years of age. While 31% of military brats are 6-11, 23% are 12-18. Only 4% of military brats are 19-22 years of age.
