(USGovernment-News.Com, April 22, 2013 ) SAVANNAH, GA – Southside Fire/EMS opened a new headquarters on Dean Forest Road on Thursday April 18, cutting the ribbon on a building that represents the success and growth the company has enjoyed in recent decades. The two new buildings total 38,000 SF and house the administrative department, staff living quarters, an EMS and fire station, and a mechanical repair center.
The facility is also disaster-ready, with 3-inch thick windows and separate electrical systems with several generators for each of the facility’s two floors; the structures are built to withstand winds up to 125 mph. The new facility cost between $3 – 4 million.
Southside Fire began operations in 1961 with one fire engine and a single station. The company has grown to include 13 fire stations, 10 EMS locations and a fleet of emergency response vehicles. In 1997, the company responded to approximately 2,000 calls each year, a number that has grown to a whopping 55,000 today.
