Gordon & Doner Urges Floridians to Prepare for Rough Hurricane Season

(USGovernment-News.Com, April 11, 2013 ) WEST PALM BEACH, FL – Up to 18 storms are predicted to earn a name and status of tropical storm in the upcoming 2013 – 2014 hurricane season, according to a statement released yesterday morning from Colorado State University (CSU). Nine storms are predicted to develop hurricane-strength winds and four to become a category 3 or higher.

While Florida landfall has seemed an exception for tropical disturbances in recent years, the last three hurricane seasons were among the busiest ever recorded, and there is little to no way to determine the odds of where a hurricane will strike. However, CSU’s hurricane forecast team is predicting a 48% chance of at least one storm striking landfall somewhere along the East Coast, a far higher percentage than the 20th century’s 31% average.

Regardless of the statistics, says forecast team member Phil Klotzbach, “all vulnerable coastal residents should make the same hurricane preparations every year,” which means Floridians, especially those living close to the coastline, should be preparing their homes and pantries for the beginning of the season on June 1.

As Hurricane Preparedness Week approaches next month, Florida property damage law firm Gordon & Doner urges residents in South Florida and the Treasure Coast to take safety measures to protect their homes and families. FEMA recommends residents stock up on non-perishable foods and drinking water, make an emergency kit and learn local evacuation routes, as well as making ready appropriate window coverings, securing outdoor items and clearing gutters, among other preparedness tips.

Guides with more information on how to prepare your home for hurricane season can be found in the Palm Beach Post and in other various media outlets as the onset of storm season approaches. If your home sustains damage in the 2013 – 2014 hurricane season, contact a property damage lawyer. The attorneys at Gordon & Doner understand the damage that can be done to a home and a family in the aftermath of a hurricane, and have the knowledge and experience to represent you in your homeowner’s claim.
