(USGovernment-News.Com, March 23, 2013 ) Augusta, GA – The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a voluntary recall of Avastin and all lots of sterile products repackaged and distributed by Clinical Specialties Compounding Pharmacy in Augusta, Georgia. The products are being recalled due to a lack of sterility assurance.
The FDA has received at least five reports of serious eye infections associated with the use of Avastin in particular. Avastin is most commonly used to treat macular degeneration in elderly patients and is also an approved cancer drug.
Clinical Specialties repackaged the drug into individual single-use syringes and the syringes were distributed to doctors’ offices in Georgia, Indiana, Louisiana, and South Carolina between December 18th, 2012 and March 13th, 2013.
Doctors that have the product are advised to stop immediate use of it and all other lots of sterile products repackaged and distributed by Clinical Specialties Compounding Pharmacy.
Patients who are exposed to compromised sterile products have an increased risk of developing life threatening infections.
