(USGovernment-News.Com, December 05, 2012 ) WEST PALM BEACH, FL – The FDA’s recent announcement states that following their evaluation, Pradaxa users did not find a greater risk of bleeding when compared with the use of a related drug, warfarin. While this announcement was in fact accurate, the FDA failed to state that the drug warfarin includes a reversal agent to handle a situation where a bleeding emergency is arises. Pradaxa, conversely, does not include an antidote which would be vital for anticlotting and thus preventing severe and perhaps fatal bleeds. Pradaxa works by inhibiting the enzyme responsible for blood clotting; however, in some instances, it works too well. When a patient who has been taking Pradaxa suffers a serious bleeding event, their blood fails to clot and can sometimes cause gastro-intestinal bleeds, resulting in hospitalization or the patient bleeding to death. In addition to the increased risk of internal bleeding, Pradaxa has also been linked to an increased risk of heart attack. Research has shown that Pradaxa patients with atrial fibrillation have a 38 percent higher risk of heart attack than patients who take similar anti-coagulants.
At this time, more than 100 lawsuits have been filed in regard to the adverse effects after use of the drug Pradaxa.
