Cochran Firm Reports on the Maryland Disability Law Center

(USGovernment-News.Com, December 05, 2012 ) Dothan, AL -- The Maryland Disability Law Center (MDLC) works hard to establish a fair and inclusive society by offering services that promote legal and human rights advocacy to people with disabilities. These services are tailored to the needs of people with disabilities, family members, other advocates and members of the disability community by using their direct input about what resources are essential. MDLC envisions a world where disabled people are fully integrated in the workplace, neighborhoods and all aspects of community life.

In addition to many other services offered, the following is a list of advocacy services offered by MDLC:

Children’s Mental Health – Children that have been diagnosed with mental health disabilities deserve to have access to a variety of high quality community-based mental health services. MDLC works with community service organizations like the Office of Public Defender, Department of Juvenile Services, Residential Treatment Centers and the Department of Human Services to make sure citizens with disabilities receive the education outreach, treatment and medical assistance they deserve.

Adult Mental Health – In addition to the rights listed above, MDLC strives to advocate for adults with psychiatric disabilities looking for safe and affordable housing. Individuals treated in psychiatric hospitals deserve trauma-sensitive environments free of coercion, abuse and neglect.

People with Developmental Disabilities – People with developmental disabilities (DD) should have access to high quality services available in their communities as needed or desired and they deserve appropriate protections to guarantee their civil and legal rights.

Assistive Technology – The MDLC advocates for individuals with disabilities to help them obtain various resources that could enhance their everyday lives. Assistive technology can be high-tech or low-tech, expensive or not, medical or non-medical. Simply put, AT is a tool. It can either be a device or service that is used to improve not only functional capacities of disabled individuals but also their quality of life.

More information about the Maryland Disability Law center can be obtained by contacting them at 410-727-6352 or visiting them on the web at www.mdlclaw.org.
