(USGovernment-News.Com, October 17, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA- Nvidia is optimistic about the future of games based in the cloud and is making plans to solve potential problems.
The head of the Nvidia green team’s GeForce Grid cloud gaming group, Phil Eisler, recently spoke to VentureBeat about the outlook.
A gamer’s connection to the Internet is one of the biggest factors for playability, and Eisler said a 5Mbps pipe is needed to achieve a 720p resolution at 30 frames per second. Better resolutions at higher frame speed can require 15 Mbps to 20Mbps.
Eisler notes that latency of more than 250 milliseconds is an issue for the first generation of cloud games.
Eisler said 20ms could be saved through efficiencies on the client side, and Nvidia is working on this, as well as cooperating with television manufacturers to reduce latency. The GPU also contributes to GeForce Grid’s latency decrease, allowing CPU cycles to be used for other things.
The Gaikai service that uses GeForce Grid is reported to reduce latency to just more than 160 ms, but that will not be good enough for many multiplayer gamers.
Nvidia will face a more manageable problem in scaling. Four simultaneous streams can be supported by Kepler-based GPUs, Eisler said, adding that the number of streams for each server will double every year. Nvidia’s GeForce Grid K520 board has dual GPUs.
Eisler said he’s optimistic about cloud gaming after Sony bought out Gaikai. He also admits that in the next decade, cloud services probably will be more for casual enthusiasts than for hard-core gamers.
