FEMA Provides Additional $2 Million for City of San Diego Fire Support

(EMAILWIRE.COM, June 27, 2008 ) OAKLAND, Ca. — The U.S. Department of Homeland Security’s Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) has committed $2,028,462 to reimburse the City of San Diego for costs related to its emergency response to the Southern California wild land fires in October 2007. The funds are made available under FEMA’s Public Assistance program.

In response to the disaster, the City of San Diego mobilized the San Diego fire-rescue operations to undertake a wide range of emergency protective measures. These measures included fighting the fires, providing emergency medical support, conducting rescue and evacuation operations and preventing the destruction of thousands of private homes and public buildings in the direct line of fires. Forty strike teams conducted fire suppression activities. Two staging areas were also set up and used as centers for personnel, materials, and equipment as well as communication and command centers.

Total dollars awarded under this grant equal $2,704,616. FEMA provides 75 percent of the total under its Public Assistance Grant program. Of the remaining costs, the State of California will cover 18.75 percent with the City of San Diego responsible for the balance.

FEMAÂ’s Public Assistance program provides reimbursements to state and local government agencies and certain non-profits for eligible disaster-related expenses associated with debris removal, emergency protective measures, repair and restoration of damaged infrastructure.
