The Link Between Asbestos Exposure and Mesothelioma

(USGovernment-News.Com, September 15, 2012 ) ST. LOUIS, Mo. - In two-thirds of all mesothelioma cases, the victims have one thing in common. At some point in their life, they were exposed to asbestos. Patients diagnosed with mesothelioma often either worked directly with products that contained asbestos, worked in an environment with a high probability of asbestos exposure, or lived with someone who carried asbestos fibers home from the workplace.

Asbestos describes six different, naturally occurring, mineral fibers. This includes chrysotile, anthophylite, grunerite (amosite), riebecktie (crocidolite), tremolite, and actinolite.

Asbestos was a popular substance used by many in the construction industry in the 20th century due to its natural resistance to both fire and heat and its reluctance to conduct electricity.

Asbestos fibers become airborne easily, however, and are inhaled by anyone who is nearby. No other causes have been definitively linked to mesothelioma, so at this time, asbestos exposure is the only sure link to contracting asbestos cancer.

When asbestos fibers enter the human body, either through inhalation, ingestion or absorption through the skin, the fibers can become lodged in lung tissure, ariways or the mesothelium membrane.

About 20 to 50 years after exposure, non-cancerous forms of asbestosis or fatal cancers such as pleural mesothelioma can result.

With decades of asbestos litigation experience, the attorneys at Gori Julian & Associates, P.C. have the resources and the knowledge necessary to successfully litigate an asbestos illness claim.
