Bit Torrent on high alert for copyrighted materials after recent legal problems reports ProxyUSA.com

(USGovernment-News.Com, September 09, 2012 ) San Francisco, CA - Is it possible to find and stop the transfer of pirated software online? This seems probable especially after the co-founder of Pirate Bay was recently arrested. Reports say that he will most likely be deported.

Researchers at the University of Birmingham revealed that people who use pirated file sharing software will have their IP addresses traced 3 hours after anything has been downloaded. These IP addresses can be used to locate the people who use their file sharing software for purposes related to piracy. The study also revealed that despite the odds being in favor of copyright companies, the people using the file sharing software could also benefit.

Tom Chothia, who has been heading this study, stated that it is often easy to distinguish between the owners of these file sharing software networks (torrents) and people who use them to actually share files, through the frequency of time spent on them.

Ars Technica stated: “Companies or people who monitor these websites have IP addresses that remain online for most of the day. This obviously shows that they are controlling what’s going on there. However, regular users have IP addresses that visit torrent websites for fewer hours.”

Researchers also noted that IP addresses belonging to the companies or people who own these types of websites were logged on for excessive hours, never completed downloads they started out with, and stopped at just 45-55%. On the other hand, users of the websites had high rates of completed downloads of movies, music and software.

This study further went on to state that public block lists could be a problem because they will be affecting those who don’t have static IP addresses. “The block lists should be changed to incorporate more updated details about IP addresses that could be dubious so people will stay away from”, said Chothia, according to huffingtonpost.com.
