Attorney Timothy J. Conlon to Present "Business Valuation Issues in Divorce Litigation" To R.I. Bar Association on Friday, June 15

(USGovernment-News.Com, June 14, 2012 ) Providence, Rhode Island - Family law attorney Timothy J. Conlon is set to speak this Friday, June 15, from 10:45 a.m. to noon at the Rhode Island Bar Association at 115 Cedar Street.

The topic of the lecture is business valuation issues in divorce litigation, including the use of expert valuation analysis and testimony in state court. The lecture will also discuss the recent Rhode Island Supreme Court business valuation case, Esposito v. Esposito, common mistakes family law practitioners should avoid and the necessary data and documentation to request or subpoena for an accurate expert report. Joining him for the event will be two noted local experts in business valuation, Peri Ann Aptaker, Esq., CPA/PFS, CFP, CBA, of Kahn, Litwin & Renza & Co., Ltd., and John Barrett, C.P.A., A.B.V., C.B.A., C.V.A., M.S.T., M.B.A., of Barrett Valuation Services, Inc.

Attorney Conlon explained why all attorneys who practice divorce and family law should be well-versed in business valuation. “Often, the most valuable asset in a divorce is the closely held business that supported the parties throughout the marriage. Although we have done some divorces where the parties continue as business partners even after the marriage partnership is over, more commonly, a buy-out is needed to equitably distribute the marital estate and to allow one party to go forward with business operations. Getting a fair valuation becomes key in dealing with the divorce for families that own a business, or spouses where the other party has created a business during the marriage.”

Timothy J. Conlon has been a Rhode Island divorce lawyer for over 30 years and has represented parties in landmark trial and appellate family law cases throughout the state. He is a frequent lecturer on many family law topics, including mediation and the use of electronic discovery in divorce. He is considered a leading attorney regarding closely held businesses in divorce litigation, and seeks to help other practitioners have a full understanding of various business valuation methodologies.

Attendees are eligible to receive CLE credit for the lecture. For more information, contact Timothy J. Conlon at 866-415-6041 or fill out our online form at http://www.tjcesq.com/CM/Custom/TOCContactUs.asp.
