Cochran Firm Reports on the Georgia DHS Afterschool Care Program in Atlanta

(USGovernment-News.Com, May 31, 2012 ) Dothan, AL -- The Georgia Department of Human Services (DHS) Afterschool Care Program is a state-funded program that offers Atlanta, Georgia teens innovative out-of-school activities. The purpose of the DHS Afterschool Care Program is to enable every child to have access to quality, inclusive, affordable after school activities that meet the needs of the child, the family and the community.

Finding the right place to send your teen after school ends is often a difficult decision for a parent to have to make. As a parent, you want the best for your children and would prefer to send them to a place where they will be given opportunities to expand their learning and build positive relationships with others. DHS recognized that positive youth development practices are effective strategies for helping youth prepare for and transition into young adulthood. The Afterschool Care Program is open to youth ages 6-19.

The Afterschool Program is hands-on project-based learning. Each student is given a project to complete with a group and work on that project for several days or weeks. During the course of working on the project, the student will have the opportunity to demonstrate their skills for the community. For instance, a group of students may form a band ensemble, practice and perform.

A few learning programs in which DHS offers include:

• Academic programs in math, science and technology,

• Arts & Culture programs in theatre and music,

• Digital Media programs in photography, videography and graphic design,

• Communications Programs in speech and public awareness campaigns

• Sports Management and

• Career Exploration program with apprenticeships and job shadowing opportunities.
