(USGovernment-News.Com, January 10, 2012 ) Asheville, NC -- If a Republican plan is approved, 43 million acres of public land across the nation will soon be opened to off-highway enthusiasts and their vehicles. The plan, an Assembly Bill, is sponsored by Representative Kevin McCarthy of California. Speaking about the proposed legislation, the Houses third-ranking Republican said, "Millions of acres of land across the United States are being held under lock and key unnecessarily." McCarthy added that his bill will only open public land that does not meet the criteria to be designated as being official wilderness by either the U.S. Forest Service or the Bureau of Land Management.
Off-roaders support the bill for reasons of pleasure and business. Dick Lepley, owner Street Track 'N Trail in Conneaut Lake, Pa., and the executive director of the Pennsylvania Off-Highway Vehicle Association, said, "Clearly, the power-sports industry contributes mightily to the nation's economy during both good times and bad, but regardless of the economy, nothing threatens dealerships and the industry at large like having no place to ride."
Making his point, Lepley added that his off-highway business puts more than $2 million in the state and U.S. coffers during good years while employing more than 50 people. Despite this support, there are some who oppose the bill saying that the restrictions that are now in place keep these lands safe from oil, gas, mining and logging exploitation.
