Topamax Birth Defects Linked to Migraine, Seizure Drug

(EMAILWIRE.COM, April 14, 2011 ) Orlando, Florida – Topamax and the generic topiramate have been linked to an increased risk of cleft palates and cleft lips in children born to women taking the drug. Research from the North American Antiepileptic Drug Pregnancy Registry found that 1.4% of infants exposed to topiramate during pregnancy developed oral cleft birth defects, compared with .38% to .55% of infants exposed to other antiepileptic drugs. Due to this new information regarding Topamax birth defects, the attorneys at Morgan and Morgan would like to hear from women who took the drug during pregnancy pregnancy and delivered a child with a cleft lip or cleft palate. Visit http://www.forthepeople.com/topamax-and-pregnancy--11-2895.html for more information on the legal issues surrounding Topamax birth defects and to receive a no cost, no obligation review of your claim.

Because of the increased risk of Topamax birth defects, the FDA instituted several changes. The agency reclassified the drug into pregnancy category D, meaning that there is evidence that the drug can potentially harm a human fetus, but there are circumstances where the medicationÂ’s benefits to pregnant women may outweigh its risk of Topamax birth defects. The FDA is also requiring that makers of the drug and its generic versions add a stronger warning label to the drug in light of the recent information regarding Topamax birth defects.

Topamax birth defects can include cleft palates and cleft lips, which develop when parts of the mouth do not join together properly. Oral birth defects typically develop in the first trimester, before many women realize that they are pregnant. Surgery is typically needed to treat Topamax clefts, though additional treatment may be required if the oral cleft leads to trouble speaking or dental problems for the child.

If you delivered a child with a cleft lip or cleft palate after taking Topamax during pregnancy, visit ForThePeople.com and complete the free case review form. At no cost to you, your Topamax birth defects claim will be evaluated to determine if you have legal recourse to recover the cost of medical bills and other damages. This free online case review is being offered courtesy of the birth injury lawyers at Morgan and Morgan, who remain dedicated to protecting the rights of women who bore children with Topamax birth defects.
