Mesothelioma Awards Names

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 21, 2011 ) WASHINGTON, DC -- LegalView, a leading online legal resource has updated its mesothelioma portal regarding the annoucement of research awards.

This week, the Mesothelioma Applied Research Foundation (Meso Foundation) announced the recipients of its annual awards. The awards will be presented in Washington, DC on June 24, 2011.

The Pioneer, Hope Builder and Volunteer of the Year Awards annually honor individuals who advance the Meso Foundation's mission to eradicate the suffering caused by the lung cancer through science, support and advocacy.

This year's Pioneer Award will be awarded to Dr. Raffit Hassan, senior investigator and chief of the Solid Tumor Immunotherapy Section in the Laboratory of Molecular Biology at the National Cancer Institute (NCI) and former chair of the Meso Foundation's Science Advisory Board. Dr. Hassan was responsible for targeting a protein that is highly expressed in mesothelioma patients called mesothelin. His research has now developed into two successful clinical trials, with a third one about to begin, providing mesothelioma patients with new treatment options. Dr. Hassan also served as the Chair of the Meso Foundation's Science Advisory Board, whose term ended in December of 2010. In that role, he was instrumental in ensuring a rigorous peer review process to facilitate funding of the most promising mesothelioma research.

Larry Davis, a dedicated Meso Foundation volunteer and mesothelioma patient, is the recipient of this year's Volunteer of the Year Award. Mr. Davis has generously donated his time to help find an effective mesothelioma treatment course and cure. Davis is also an avid runner and organized an 8K race benefiting the Meso Foundation and its mesothelioma grant research program. He has also raised much-needed awareness of the disease among politicians, business leaders and doctors. Through his outreach, Davis has secured national media coverage of the Meso Foundation and its mission. He has also promoted the critical need for research.

Named after former Congressman Bruce Vento, who lost his life to mesothelioma in 2000, the Bruce Vento Hope Award honors individuals who promote advocacy for the disease. This year's recipient is Linda Reinstein, founder of the Asbestos Disease Awareness Organization (ADAO). In 2006, Reinstein lost her husband to mesothelioma, and ever since she has been a national and international advocate for banning asbestos. Asbestos exposure is the principle cause of mesothelioma, and it is still not banned in the United States.
