Runner Raises Money for Mesothelioma Cure

(EMAILWIRE.COM, February 09, 2011 ) Denver, CO - LegalView, a leading online legal resource, has updated its mesothelioma portal.

In 2007, Steve Lee was diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer. At the age of 65, Lee runs to raise money for the illness. Recently, he ran a half-marathon and raised more than $62,000.

The doctors told Lee that he only had about a year to live, so he decided that he wanted to make a positive impact during his final days. He is still alive three years after the initial diagnosis was made. Steve suspected that he was exposed to asbestos while working in construction as as a student. Exposure to asbestos has been shown to be the primary cause of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is a deadly cancer that affects the lining of the lungs, heart and abdomen.

Currently, there is no cure for mesothelioma. Lee hopes that by running and raising money, mesothelioma treatments will become more effective. The funds that Lee raises are going towards research at Queen Mary, University of London. Also, the university will match the amount raised by Lee. Research may take several years to complete, but mesothelioma patients are anxious to see the results.

Chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation therapy are all forms of mesothelioma treatment. Additionally, gene therapy has been shown to help as genetic material specifically targets cancer cells and makes them more vulnerable to chemotherapy treatment.

When inhaled, asbestos fibers enter cells and disrupt cellular structures that are essential to cell division. These cellular changes can lead to cancer which is caused by rapid cellular division. Additionally, asbestos causes the production of free radical molecules which change DNA, causing cells to mutate and become cancerous.

Individuals who work in occupations such as construction are at higher risk for inhaling asbestos which could lead to mesothelioma and other health problems. Approximately, 2,000 to 3,000 cases of mesothelioma are diagnosed each year in the United States, comprising around three percent of all cancer diagnoses. The cancer occurs about four times as frequently in men than in women and all forms of mesothelioma, except for benign mesothelioma, are terminal since there is no cure.

Mesothelioma symptoms include: pain and swelling in the abdomen, unexplained weight loss, or fatigue. The disease may take up to 30 years for it to manifest, so during the early stages, the disease can be misdiagnosed as pneumonia.

Since many manufacturers of asbestos knew about its dangerous affects, many mesothelioma patients could be entitled to financial compensation.
