LegalView Announces New Jersey Law Requiring Coaches to Eliminate Students Who May Have a Brain Injury

(EMAILWIRE.COM, December 16, 2010 ) LegalView, an on-line legal resource, has updated its brain injury portal.

New Jersey, Gov. Chris Christie, signed a bill into law requiring public and private school athletic coaches to eliminate any athlete during a game who shows signs of a concussion. Also, students with a concussion are required to receive clearance from a physician before they can play again.

When Christie signed the bill, he was accompanied by National Football League Commissioner, Roger Goodell, New York Jets Chairman and CEO, Woody Johnson, and several New York Giants defensive players. The bill was also signed in one of New Jersey's newest football stadiums. The new bill requires all New Jersey public and private school districts to develop policies to handle brain injuries.

Concussions are usually caused by a blow to the head and can lead to serious, long-term neurological disorders and are considered traumatic brain injuries. In the United States alone, over 1.4 million people suffer a traumatic brain injury, or TBI, every year. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, almost 4 million sports-related injuries occur every year; many of them are concussions among high school students. Many school districts do not have any rules governing how concussions are treated - and few coaches are trained to identify them.

Concussions are more dangerous for teens because, studies show that teenagers' brain tissue is less developed than adults' and can become easily damaged. Also, high school athletes typically receive less medical attention than college or pro-athletes, or they receive no attention at all. Many times, high school athletic coaches put athletes back into the game when they should be receiving some form of medical attention. This is why the recently signed New Jersey law is important for the safety of teenage athletes.

Not only do blows to the head like those that occur in high-contact sports cause TBIs, but there are several other causes such as gun shots, falls, or motor vehicle accidents. These events are often life-changing and many individuals do not have the resources available that would make life normal after a brain injury.

If you or your child has suffered a traumatic brain injury and are interested in filing a potential brain injury lawsuit or would just like to receive a free consultation from a brain injury lawyer, please visit http://www.legalview.info/. In addition to TBIs, LegalView offers information about mesothelioma cancer.
