5th Annual Walk & Roll Challenge Underway in San Antonio

(EMAILWIRE.COM, September 17, 2010 ) - San Antonio – In support of the San Antonio-Bexar County Metropolitan Planning Organization’s (MPO) Walk & Roll Program, the Alamo Area Council of Governments (AACOG) will conduct their 5th Annual Walk & Roll Challenge to reward local businesses, organizations, and their employees who log the most "smart miles" between September 1 and September 30, 2010.

“Smart miles” are miles traveled using active, alternative transportation instead of driving alone. Eligible smart miles include carpooling, vanpooling, riding the bus, riding a bicycle, or walking to to work, school, shopping, entertainment, errands or conducting other business within the 12-county region surrounding San Antonio. Smart miles save gas money, improve air quality, and provide health benefits. In addition to miles actually traveled by alternative means, comparable miles will be credited in this challenge to those who telecommute (working from home on a given day instead of going to the office) and to those who work in their office only four days a week due to a compressed work week.

Organizations whose employees have logged the most miles per employee by the end of September will receive a Walk & Roll Challenge trophy cup. In addition, individuals who accumulate the most miles in the categories of busing, carpooling or vanpooling, biking, and walking will each win prizes valued at $100 or more. The challenge-winning organizations and individuals will be recognized and awarded at the October 25, 2010 meeting of the MPOÂ’s Transportation Policy Board.

The overall goal of the 2010 Walk & Roll Challenge is to accumulate 750,000 smart miles. That would be the equivalent of removing 2,784 pounds of ozone-producing pollutants from our air. With the Walk & Roll Challenge, everyone is a winner because we are all breathing easier!
