Oakland County Road Commission Leaves Storm Drain Maintenance to Homeowners

(EMAILWIRE.COM, July 11, 2010 ) White Lake, MI – The Oakland County Road Commission has not resolved the problem for White Lake residents who have experienced flooding problems in their front yards. The standing water is a health concern for residents with swampland in front of their homes.

Susan Downey began calling the Oakland County Road Commission back in the Fall of 2008, when the ditch in her front yard began filling up with water. “The water is stagnant. Mosquitoes are a huge problem now and my front yard is populated by frogs, ducks, turtles and muskrats.”

During a recent interview, Susan told us she saw her neighbor attempting to clean out the storm drain in front of his home. “He was reaching into the storm drain under his driveway with a shovel to clean out the muck and debris,” said Susan. “I thought the Oakland County Road Commission was responsible for storm drain maintenance. I can’t believe this is left to the homeowners.”

When Susan discussed the problem with her parents, they told her they had a similar problem. “My father told me to call the county commissioner. He said his county commissioner took care of a water problem at the end of his driveway within days of his phone call.”

Susan called Jim Runestad, the county commissioner assigned to the White Lake area and explained her problem to him. “Jim listened to my concerns and made some calls,” said Susan. “He kept in communication with me and eventually explained how the Oakland County Road Commission is understaffed and lacks the funds to fix the problem.”

It has been over two years since Susan and her neighbors began calling the Oakland County Road Commission and their County Commissioner, Jim Runestad. She is hoping that there is someone out there with “connections” or some advice as to what can be done to resolve the problem.
