Alexandria, VA – The National Association of Chain Drug Stores (NACDS) will host its Second Annual NACDS RxIMPACT Day on Capitol Hill in Washington, D.C. from March 10-11, 2010. Over 200 pharmacy representatives from over 35 states have registered to attend policy and advocacy briefings and will participate in hundreds
of meetings with federal lawmakers on the importance of pro-patient, pro-pharmacy healthcare policy.
From flu immunizations to patient counseling, pharmacists are dedicated to providing high-quality care that both improves patient health and reduces cost. Of particular focus during RxIMPACT Day, NACDS will emphasize pharmacyÂ’s role in improving medication adherence, which involves taking the right medications in the right ways. The New England Healthcare Institute estimates that medication non-adherence (the failure to properly maintain a prescription regimen) costs society $290 billion a year in healthcare costs (i.e. complications related to chronic disease, emergency room visits and hospitalizations).
Chief executive officers, pharmacy directors, community pharmacists, pharmacy school deans and student pharmacists will meet with their representatives to stress the importance and value of pharmacy, and to showcase pharmacyÂ’s commitment and contributions to the health and well-being of AmericaÂ’s communities. As the face of neighborhood healthcare, pharmacy is considered the most accessible healthcare provider, and among the most trust-worthy professions, in the United States.
NACDS RxIMPACT Day on Capitol Hill brings the diversity of the pharmacy community together to demonstrate its commitment to quality patient care.

NACDS members also include more than 900 pharmacy and front-end suppliers, and over 70 international members from 24 countries. Chains operate 37,000 pharmacies, and employ more than 2.5 million employees, including 118,000 full-time pharmacists. They fill more than 2.5 billion prescriptions annually, which is more than 72 percent of annual prescriptions in the United States. The total economic impact of all retail stores with pharmacies transcends their $815 billion in annual sales.
