Decline of Available Toll Free Numbers Continues To Cause Alarm

(EMAILWIRE.COM, March 19, 2009 ) Washington, DC - There is an increasing demand for toll free phone numbers despite the financial slow down. However, those who are applying for new toll free numbers are facing problems in finding new numbers, which is suspected to be caused by the illegal hording of the toll free numbers. This increased demand is to increase the cost of the toll free numbers creating a brokering niche of its own. Tollfree advisory commission is concerned that soon we will be running out of the toll free numbers if action is not taken against this menace.
The illegal hoarding and brokering of toll free numbers have called for legal action from federal authorities. There is a very limited availability of new numbers for 800, 866, 877, 888. These most wanted toll free numbers have gone into the black market and as per the sources, the federal authorities are set out to crackdown the black market for toll free numbers. While federal authorities are yet to get into action, the scarcity continues to increase. There are very few toll free numbers left to be registered. This is causing an alarm among businesses that have expansion plans on reinforcing their customer service to fight competition and to combat the financial meltdown. It is also reported that there are attempts to sell off the coveted toll free numbers in eBay. Some of them are reported to lease the numbers rather than selling them off completely to ensure continued profit from the numbers that they are hoarding.
The intervention of the Federal Communications Commission is likely to bring some relief in this regard. The FCC is not directly involved in the selection or assignment of toll free numbers. The FCC limits itself to the issuance of guidelines for the same. The FCC guidelines will dictate how these numbers are to be used and how toll free numbers can be obtained. As per the FCC guidelines, hoarding of the toll free numbers is not only prohibited but it also elicits heavy fines. There are reports that fines up to $11,000 have been levied per day for a California company that continued to use illegal toll free practices.
According to the statement of one of the members of SMSGOV.com, which is a Tollfree Advisory Committee we are likely to run out of the toll free numbers if the database is not upgraded. The suggested efforts also include clearing up of the unused 800 numbers. When the unused 800 numbers are deactivated, the database will have access to numbers that have been locked up. However, clearing up or deactivation of the unused 800 numbers alone will not suffice because the number of new applications that are submitted daily are much higher than the locked up 800 numbers.
Increased demand for toll free numbers, depletion of the available toll free numbers and illegal hoarding and leasing of the 800 numbers continue to raise alarms. Awareness has to be created among business owners on the FCC guidelines on the proper acquisition and usage of toll free numbers.
