Drug and Alcohol Rehab New York Invites Older Heroin Addicts To Get Treated After Spike In New York

(USGovernment-News.Com, April 25, 2015 ) New York, NY -- The increasing heroin epidemic generally impacts the youth, however there has been a recent spike of heroin addiction among older adults. According to the National Center for Health Statistics, heroin related deaths in individuals 45 to 64 have essentially quintupled within the past decade.

Many of these older adults who have found themselves addicted to heroin, started out using painkillers. However, what starts as using painkillers for pain management can later turn into individuals developing a tolerance. Once a tolerance is developed, painkillers may not be enough anymore, and that's where individuals begin to turn to heroin.

Dan Pirrone, a 56 year old recovering heroin addict, found himself consuming over 20 bags of heroin daily. The 56 year old developed a $3000 a month habit that caused him to blow through his savings and work odd jobs just to fund his heroin habit. Pirrone described his heroin addiction as relieving. In a statement he said "It was a feeling of relief from the pain, of any kind of pain -- emotional, physical, psychological".

Being as though heroin addiction is most common amongst teens and young adults, there isn't much of a push for advocating older adults to seek treatment.

A medical associate from Drug and Alcohol Rehab New York commented "It's true that society advocates for teens and young adults more than older adults. I definitely think there needs to be a bigger push for getting older adults suffering from addiction to seek help. Addiction doesn't have a name or face. At Drug and Alcohol Rehab New York we invite individuals of all ages that are suffering from addiction. We especially welcome older adults who think it's too late to seek help."
